Darr's latest CD features Christmas music
Dec 13, 2012 (The Wilson Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Wilson resident and harpist Vonda Darr debuted her Christmas CD, "Hear the Angels: A Christmas Harp Collection," this holiday season.
The Christmas CD was recorded at Barton College and includes 13 traditional Christmas songs.
A few songs featured on the CD include "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," "Go Tell It On the Mountain," "Joy to the World," "The First Noel" and many others.
"I enjoy sharing the music and the harp with people; it is such a beautiful instrument to begin with, and I feel blessed that I have the opportunity to share it," she said.
Darr, who has been a professional harpist for 25 years, made her first CD 15 years ago (a hymnal arrangement) and knew the next one she would do would be a Christmas CD. "I just didn't know it would take me this long to do it!" she said.
Phil Valera, assistant professor of communications at Barton College, asked Darr last Christmas if she would be interested in recording, and since he could do it at the college, "it just seemed like the perfect timing."
"We recorded it this summer when it was 95 degrees," Darr said.
Darr, who has been playing since she was just 6 years old, said she enjoys playing the harp to honor God with the gifts he has given her.
Darr grew up in Minnesota and then attended college in Pennsylvania at Geneva College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in harp performance. She moved to Wilson for her husband's job with Bridgestone.
She has held the title of principal harpist with the Augusta Symphony in Georgia for 20 years. She also plays second harp and is substitute principal with the North Carolina Symphony. Darr plays with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina, the Hilton Head Symphony, the South Carolina Philharmonic and the Barton College/ Wilson Symphony Orchestra.
With the Georgia orchestra Darr has had the opportunity to play with artists such as Olivia Newton-John, LeAnn Rimes, Art Garfunkel and Amy Grant.
She has also been featured playing the harp in a scene for the movie "Who's Your Caddy "
Darr is grateful to be able to share her music with the public through her CDs and hopes her Christmas one will help people get into the Christmas spirit.
"My hope is that the CD will be something that is peaceful, relaxing, joyful and meditative and will help people focus on the beauty and meaning of Christmas."
Darr's CD "Hear the Angels: A Christmas Harp Collection" can be purchased at The Nook in The Shoppes at Brentwood in Wilson, and both her CDs are available for purchase online at www.vondadarr.com.
