The Providence Journal, R.I., John Kostrzewa column

Dec 17, 2012 (The Providence Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Rhode Island usually ranks at the bottom of national surveys of the states' business climates and tax policies.

But two new reports give Rhode Island a brighter review.

Rhode Island ranked 11th in an index that ranked the states' broadband networks and their ability to deliver government and education services and promote economic development. The index, compiled by TechNet, a coalition of business executives that promotes technology-led innovation, ranked Massachusetts 2nd and Connecticut 17th.

In a separate survey, Rhode Island ranked as the 10th healthiest state in report compiled by the UnitedHealth Foundation, the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for a Prevention.

The rankings, released by the Rhode Island Dept. of Health, cited the state's strengths in its high immunization coverage and ready availability of primary care physicians.
