Kidnapping suspect arrested
Dec 13, 2012 (Skagit Valley Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A Whatcom County corrections deputy arrested a suspect in connection with the kidnapping of a Skagit County woman in her car.
James M. Craver was arrested shortly after 11:40 a.m. Wednesday in Bellingham, according to a Bellingham police news release.
The deputy spotted Craver and two other male subjects as the deputy drove a marked patrol vehicle on Pacific Street. The deputy recognized Craver from past contacts and knew that police were looking for him.
Craver was taken into custody without incident and turned over to Bellingham detectives.
The reported kidnapping occurred Tuesday evening. Multiple 911 callers reported a man prowling vehicles at about 4:50 p.m. in the area of West Bakerview Road and Eliza Avenue in Bellingham.
Witnesses say the man got into a car and forced the 28-year-old female occupant to drive away.
The man was reportedly armed with a box cutter. Witnesses also provided a license plate number, which helped police track down the victim's cellphone number. A sergeant called her and spoke to her briefly, but the man pulled the phone away and disabled it, according to reports.
Eventually, the woman reported she had been left alone and unharmed on Iowa Street.
She told police the man got into her car and threatened he had a gun, demanding her to drive. He got out of the car about 7 p.m. on Frasier Street.
Bellingham police identified Craver as the suspect.
