Newtown students describe hearing gunshots and running for safety

NEWTOWN, Dec 14, 2012 (New Haven Register - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Hundreds of Sandy Hook Elementary School students, some as young as 5-years-old, had their studies tragically interrupted by the sounds of repeated gunshots Friday morning.

A total of 27 people, including 18 children, were confirmed dead as of early Friday afternoon.

Several pupils described the gunshots and running for safety in the school.

Venesa Bajraliu, 9, said she was in her art class and the door wouldn't close. She ran to an office area and locked the door.

"I heard gunshots and a scream on the loud speaker," Venesa said. "I just hid in my room." Richie Wilson, 7, said the gunshots sounded like "really loud pots were banging." Luie Munguia, 8, a third-grader at the school, said, "I heard gunshots; I was under a desk with three or four other people." He said police then came in. Luie said he did not see anyone who got hurt.

Mergim Bajraliu, a student at Newtown High School, 17, has a sister, 9, who is in fourth grade at the school.

They live nearby and he heard the shots and went to the school before most of the responders arrived to get his sister, and saw a police officer carrying out a little girl whose body was limp.

"The cop was just carrying her, and she was leaning back. It was very traumatizing," he said.
