Custodian had enlarged heart, coroner says

EDWARDSVILLE, Dec 13, 2012 (The Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A custodian found dead inside a vehicle on the grounds of Edwardsville High School had an enlarged heart, but there is no evidence yet that it contributed to his death, the Madison County coroner said Thursday.

Robert L. Buchwald, 58, of the 100 block of Fourth Avenue in Edwardsville, was discovered dead Wednesday in an Edwardsville School District van on school property behind the school. He was employed in the Maintenance Department for the school district. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:35 p.m. by Madison County Coroner's Investigator Todd R. Ballard.

"The autopsy conducted (Thursday) morning revealed an enlarged heart; however, no definitive cause of death will be prescribed pending completion of routine toxicology testing and microscopic studies," Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said.

No evidence of injury, foul play or criminal activity was discovered, he said.

"There is no evidence suggestive that the death is anything other than natural causes at this time," Nonn said in a statement released Thursday.

The Edwardsville Police Department also is investigating the case.

Funeral arrangements remain incomplete.

District Superintendent Ed Hightower said Buchwald had worked for the district for six years, serving in grounds and maintenance duties.
