BRIEF: Naperville-area school locked down as police search for burglary suspect

Dec 11, 2012 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Naperville-area elementary school was on lockdown this morning following reports of a person in the area who may be armed, according to district officials.

The lockdown was lifted before 10 a.m.

Steeple Run Elementary, 6S151 Steeple Run Drive, went on lockdown prior to the start of school after receiving notification of criminal activity from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, according to Naperville Unit District 203 Director of Communications Susan Rice. No students were in the building at the time.

Dawn Domrose, community relations officer for the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, said deputies are searching for a burglary suspect, but she did not know whether the person is armed.

The attempted burglary took place about 6 a.m. at a home near Maple Avenue and Naperville Road, Domrose said later in a news release. The burglar entered a home, was confronted by the homeowner, and fled, according to the release.

District officials asked Steeple Run students to remain at home until they were and those who ride the bus have been diverted to Kennedy Junior High in Lisle.

Students were safely in clase by about 9:30 a.m., according to the school district. Twitter: @TribLocal ___ (c)2012 the Chicago Tribune Visit the Chicago Tribune at Distributed by MCT Information Services
