Love to hate item numbers, Indore? Student Ravina Nagar reveals how her personal music collection has mainly '70s and '80s and the current slow songs, and it's only at weddings and parties that she listens to item songs where she is too busy dancing to pay attention to the lyrics. "Item songs nowadays have meaningless lyrics so it's out of the question to listen to them when all one wants is to spend some peaceful time alone," she shrugs. Agreeing with her is marketing professional Mayur Agrawal who shares how he avoids even casually humming item songs in public as he feels it will portray a rather negative image of him. "During movie promotions, every TV and radio channel plays item songs every single minute, so even if you try not to, unintentionally you do end up humming them. But that makes people around you think really low about your choice of music," he laughs. While these youngsters shy away from item songs when it comes to listening to them, but get them on the dance floor and they cannot survive without these fast numbers, as another young entrepreneur Sandeep Chowdhary opines how he prefers music which has a combination of both, item and slow numbers. "The choice of one's music mostly depends on the mood. When I am feeling happy, I cannot afford to listen to blues! So, of course, I prefer music which makes me groove, even if it has pointless lyrics," he opines, And the dance fever indeed increases the appetite for item songs as choreographer Akshay Memrot explains how his students will not dance to any Bollywood song unless it's an item number. He, however, feels that the craze for this genre is temporary and only heart warming songs stay for long with people. "Item songs are a good option when you feel like dancing for fun. But when it comes to technical details, teaching dancing to the tunes of such songs gets very difficult as people don't want to see any other step other than the signature one," he rues. While youngsters prefer item songs for weddings and casual dances, the genre gets a big no-no when it comes to serious dancing, as explains Dj Arsonix. "Indorians, nowadays, are always up to exploring new genres of music. While private parties still are dominated by Bollywood item numbers, sophisticated dancing and leisure listening is ruled by other genres only," Arsonix concludes.
