BRIEF: Injured YDC inmate released from hospital

Dec 08, 2012 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The 15-year-old Augusta Youth Development Center inmate who was hospitalized Sunday after an assault from another youth has been released and is recovering from "cuts and bruises," the Department of Juvenile Justice said Friday.

In a media release, the agency said the victim is recovering after a fight in a residence unit and that DJJ Commissioner Avery Niles has asked that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation not only investigate this incident but also widen the investigation to "look at all matters of a criminal nature" at the facility.

The release said the YDC is no longer in lockdown status. The fight occurred between two male inmates, and no other youths were injured. The DJJ is recommending that felony charges be brought against the attacker, according to the release.

Neither youth will be returned to the facility.

"The widening joint DJJ -- GBI investigation is expected to continue at the Augusta YDC for several weeks," the release said.

Niles is expected to name a new director by the end of the month. Ronald Brawner quit in October shortly after five youths escaped the facility.
