Ripon police, fire want you to have a safe holiday


RIPON, Dec 06, 2012 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Ripon Police and Fire departments have issued safety tips for Central Valley residents this holiday season. We see these regularly at this time of year, but it's always good to get a reminder. Unplug holiday lights when not in use. Do not overload electrical outlets, or run extension cords under carpets. Only use lights that bear the mark of an independent testing laboratory. Do not burn paper or trash in your fireplace. Do not dump fireplace ash into your garbage can. Do not leave burning candles unattended. Do not leave burning fireplaces unattended. Do not leave cooking food unattended -- unattended cooking food is one of the leading causes of home fires in the United States. Test all smoke detectors and install fresh batteries every six months. Have a properly rated-charged fire extinguisher available in your home. Do not leave your vehicle unattended and running at any time. Do not leave valuables (Purse, cell phone, wallet, laptop etc.) in your vehicle during the day. Do not leave valuables (Purse, cell phone, wallet, laptop etc.) in your vehicle overnight. Do not leave gifts, toys etc. unattended in your vehicle at any time. Lock your vehicle at all times. If you have a car alarm, use it. Park your car in your garage at night and lock the car. Make sure your main garage door is closed at night. Make sure your side garage door is locked. Make sure the doors and windows at your home are locked at all times. If you have a residential alarm, use it. Make sure your side yard gate is locked. Make sure your newspapers and mail are being picked up daily. Do not leave outside lights on during the daylight.
