Marysville's new fire truck stirs envy

Dec 06, 2012 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Assets may be scarce in the cash-strapped Marysville.

But a new $800,000 Sneal 105-foot aerial ladder truck parked at the fire house on Ninth Street is the envy of fire districts far and wide.

The Fremont Rideout Health Group purchased the truck so emergency crews can access the top floor and helicopter landing area of a six-story medical tower under construction at Rideout Regional Medical Center.

It rolled into town nearly a year ago. But the new fire truck smell still lingers.

"The newness hasn't worn off. It's like a kid who gets a new toy," said CalFire-Marysville Capt. Dale Skinner.

Rideout's $225 million expansion is expected to be completed in late 2014 and will add 215,000 square feet to the facility, including a larger, updated emergency center.

An environmental impact report found that the city's 75-foot ladder truck would be insufficient for serving the expanded hospital.

"We haven't had a fire (in Marysville) where we've had it in use," said CalFire-Marysville Battalion Chief Mike Carr of the Sneal. "But we run it as our first-out engine so we can put it through the paces." The truck, which has a 2,000-gallon water pump and 10,000-watt built-in generator, replaced a 1986 model with far less power, Skinner said.

It also has a camera that allows the driver to see behind the truck and to monitor blind spots.

"Everyone's learning to drive it now," said Skinner. "You can't do anything wrong without bells and whistles going off." A new CalFire contract in Paradise recently led to that city's purchase of Marysville's old truck for $30,000, Skinner said.

The city paid $165,000 for it in 1987.

"I cut my teeth on that thing," said Charlie Brown, a former Marysville fireman who now works as a paramedic in Kern County. "But it doesn't hold a candle to what they've got in Marysville now."
