IT meeting Wednesday

ATHENS, Dec 04, 2012 (Athens Daily Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Henderson County Information Technology Committee takes up the topic of the county website again at a meeting Wednesday in the Courthouse Annex.

The committee has been looking into the change since citizens attempting to get election returns Nov. 6 clicked on the site, and found long delays in receiving information.

At the Nov. 20 Commissioners Court meeting, the members heard a report from IT Manager Josh Brock, who explained that the election returns were put online, but because of a lack of sufficient bandwidth, Internet users couldn't access the numbers. The problems lasted through election night, and into the following day.

At the Nov. 20 Commissioners meeting, Precinct 2 Commissioner Wade McKinney entered a motion that the county change the e-mail exchange server, and the county website hosting. Precinct 4 Commissioner Ken Geeslin seconded the motion. Both McKinney and Geeslin serve on the IT Committee.

Actions of the IT Committee are non-binding, and its recommendations must receive the approval of Commissioners Court to take effect.

Henderson County, like many counties across the state, have used Cirra to host their websites. Because many Texas counties were using Cirra for their returns on election night, the service failed. It was the third time in the past two years that the problem had prevented county residents from getting online results on election night.

Brock said Cirra is an attractive choice for most county websites, because they can use the service free of charge.

Also on the IT Committee agenda is a discussion of judicial software and packages.
