BRIEF: Roger Penske to be honored with Joe Louis 'Brown Bomber' award

Dec 04, 2012 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Roger Penske will be among those honored in 2013 with a Brown Bomber Jacket -- an award given annually to commemorate the anniversary of Joe Louis knocking out Max Schmeling in 1938.

The award is given by the Joe Louis Video Memorial Room at Cobo Center to celebrate individuals who have made a positive impact on the community.

Ted Talbert, founder of the Memorial Room, said Penske is being recognized for his contributions in bringing the Grand Prix back to Belle Isle.

Penske, 75, won his first NASCAR championship last month when driver Brad Keselowski of Rochester Hills clinched the Sprint Cup title for Team Penske.

The Birmingham businessman also is a longtime IndyCar team owner and winner of 15 Indy 500s.

The 22nd annual presentation of the jackets is scheduled for June 22 -- the 75th anniversary of the Louis-Schmeling fight. Additional recipients will be named later.
