BRIEF: Joe Bryan to chair Wake board of commissioners for third time

RALEIGH, Dec 03, 2012 (The News & Observer (Raleigh - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Joe Bryan was elected chairman of the Wake County Board of Commissioners Monday and Phil Matthews was chosen again as co-chairman, as Republicans held control of the governing board.

Bryan is a longtime board member who has served as chairman twice in the past, in 2005 and 2008. He replaces Paul Coble in the seat.

"I see the biggest challenge as trying to reestablish our partnership with the Wake County Board of Education," Bryan said.

The commission and school board, under the control of different political parties, will have to work together to bring about a successful school-construction bond issue in the coming year, he said.

Newly elected board member Caroline Sullivan took her seat on Monday, and incumbents Betty Lou Ward and James West also were sworn in for new terms.
