The electrical retailers say tablets such as Apple's iPad will become essential items as parents buy them for themselves and their children. Mark Slater, of parent firm Dixons, said: "Tablets have caught the imagination."
He said iPad's cheaper rivals had turned tablets into mainstream gifts despite continued weakness in the economy.
