It's easily my favorite time of year, partly because I'm one of those strange ones who really enjoy snow. Mostly, I enjoy the spirit of the season and when I was younger, the toys. One of my earlier memories is staring at a J.C. Penney Wishbook, essentially drooling over the Star Wars Millennium Falcon. No, I never got it. I think I just enjoyed looking at the toys and dreaming about them, just as much as I did when I received them. Some of that may also have to do with the fact that the toys I did receive are just sitting at my childhood home, collecting dust. I may have to break them out and play with them...just for old times sake. Now, I think I've passed my love onto my daughter. It probably doesn't hurt that we've already decorated the house for Christmas too. We always have to start early, mostly because we travel so much during the holiday season. So last Friday night, I made the yearly trek into the storage room to start hauling out all of the Christmas ornaments. Mady's eyes lit up the moment she say "ho-ho," her affectionate name for our stuffed Santa Claus ornament. "Ho-ho, you came back," she yelled, giving him a big hug. I was curious how much she would remember from last year's Christmas, and apparently Ho-Ho jogged her memory. She busied herself with carry Ho-Ho around while I attempted to put up the tree. You'd think that having put up the same tree would be simple, but when it comes to building things -- it's never simple with me. After 20 minutes of grunts, groans and Mady climbing under the tree to try to help, we finally had the artificial tree up. That led to our attempting to pick out possible gifts, except Mady had a bit of a one-track mind. Lately Mady has been obsessed with technology. She loves to look at pictures on smart phones and to play Angry Birds. We don't have an iPhone, so I should have seen this one coming. "Daddy," Mady asked, "can I have an ew-pad " "Do you mean an iPad " "No, a ew-pad daddy." "I'm afraid to see that one." Whatever happened to asking for G.I.
