Azerbaijan to commercialize resources of low-orbit satellite

Nov 27, 2012 (Trend News Agency - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Azerkosmos JSC at Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies will commercialize resources of low-orbit satellite, the company told Trend on Monday.

Currently the company is developing a business plan on the possibilities of using space radar and optical images, both in Azerbaijan and in the markets of the regional countries.

"Azerbaijani satellite operator regularly negotiates with the structures that could be potential buyers of satellite images. Ongoing negotiations are rather informative at this stage, they envisage creation of a fertile ground for future cooperation," the company said.

Azerbaijan plans to create a universal ground station, which will also be used to receive satellite images from other satellites flying over the region.

A tender has been announced for creation of a center, which envisages purchase of universal ground station services, optical satellite services and radar system with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR).

The tender announced earlier by Azerkosmos for the construction, launch of low-orbit satellites and insurance services is deemed valid. The tender results will be announced shortly after the evaluation of the proposals. The launch of low-orbit satellite is scheduled for 2014.
