Local businesses prepare for Black Friday

Nov 21, 2012 (The Creston News Advertiser - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The tradition of crawling out of bed early Friday, with sleepy eyes and bed head, to take advantage of deep discounts on televisions, laptops, cell phones, apparel and more continues this year.

Black Friday deals at Radio Shack and Chat Mobility, 600 W. Taylor Suite A, will begin 6 a.m. Friday and include deals on the Digix tablet and Toshiba laptop, among other electronics. (For all their deals, see the Radio Shack insert in today's paper) "Black Friday is becoming more and more popular," said Tonya Rehmeyer, Radio Shack associate. "The last two years we've been so busy. We have had 15 or so people standing outside." Schweser's, 115 N. Maple St., will also have Black Friday deals starting 6 a.m. Friday with discounts up to 60 to 80 percent on the entire stock of sweaters, fleeces, handbags and holiday decor for women.

Kristy Fontana, manager of Schweser's, said Monday this is the third consecutive year they're holding a Black Friday event. The store will be doing a door buster this year with an extra 30 percent off from 6 to 8 a.m., 20 percent off from 8 a.m. to noon and 20 percent off from 4 to 9 p.m. And, while supplies last, a free tote bag and holiday CD will be given with every purchase.

"It's going to be a wild one," Fontana said, "We are expecting about two times the sales we have on a normal day. They can really take advantage of sales and won't have the crowds or lines like Des Moines. They don't have to go there. They can stay here and shop with our friendly staff." Maurice's, 808 Laurel St., will open 8 p.m. Thanksgiving night and have Black Friday discounts for 24 hours until 8 p.m. Friday evening.

"We're doing it big this year," said Kayla Hoffman, Maurice's store manager. "We felt like we missed people last year. So, this year we're going to be open 24 hours and people can hit us before or after they go to Walmart. We are looking for another good crowd this year." Hoffman said she can't tell the specifics of the deals, but consumers can expect to get the best discounts at Maurices from 8 p.m. Thursday evening to 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Family Shoe Store, 219 W. Adams St., will have a two-day sale including 25 percent off regular-priced shoe purchases from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday and 20 percent off shoes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. The store will have sales Saturday, too, with 20 percent off regular priced shoes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Farm & Home, 408 S. Sumner, will host a three-day sale starting 7:30 a.m. Friday.
