Bidding goes live for Cameroon license [Bikya Masr (Egypt)]

(Bikya Masr (Egypt) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Cameroon launches bids for new mobile license.

LAGOS: The Cameroon government has announced it has received a number of bids from leading international telecom operators for the country's third mobile phone license.

According to local reports, India's Bharti Airtel, Korea Telecom, Maroc Telecom and Viettel have all submitted successfully bids, and the government has said that all those bidding have put forward over $200 million.

It comes after a number of companies dropped out, including Deutsche Telekom, Portugal Telecom and Monaco Telecom/C&W Communications, which has left the doors wide open for the other operators to enter the market.

The telecommunications ministry has until November 19 to analyze the bids, and choose the company for the second phase.

Cameroon's current mobile operators are Orange Cameroon and MTN Cameroon. They also share the phone market with fixed incumbent Camtel. The government said it hoped that the entry of another operator will boost competition and result in lower prices.

It will also see a boost in infrastructure for the telecom market with a new operator, who will be allowed to go live sometime next year if the process goes smoothly.
