Hidden Valley High gives trashy recycling site the heave-ho

Nov 19, 2012 (The Roanoke Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Roanoke County officials are moving the recycling trailers at Hidden Valley High School to the Brambleton Center because excess recyclables, household garbage, and bulk items were being consistently left in the area.

According to a news release from the county, the school system requested the trailers be removed. The last day to drop off recyclables at Hidden Valley High School will be Friday.

The trailers at the Brambleton Center will be in the rear parking lot starting Monday. The Brambleton Center is located at 3738 Brambleton Ave.

Roanoke County officials said recently they've been struggling with people leaving excess recyclables and trash at the site of the county's recycling trailers. People have left household garbage, televisions, buckets with plaster, tires and vehicle seats in recent weeks. Officials have said this amounts to illegal dumping.

The county, which does not offer curbside recycling, has five recycling sites. They are located at: William Byrd Middle School, Glenvar Middle School, Cox Communications on Fallowater Lane, Hollins University and now the Brambleton Center.

The recycling sites accept: plastics No. 1 through No. 7, aluminum, steel cans, tin cans and mixed paper such as newsprint, office paper, magazines and cardboard.
