Waynesboro police seek driver who nearly hit Collins student

Nov 16, 2012 (The News Virginian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Waynesboro police are looking for the older female driver of a black sports utility vehicle who failed to stop and nearly struck a female student and crossing guard Wednesday afternoon in front of Kate Collins Middle School.

Police say a school crossing guard was able to pull the student out of harm's way or the SUV would have hit both.

The incident happened about 3:25 p.m. Waynesboro Police Sgt. Brian Edwards said a crossing guard was on Ivy Street attempting to stop traffic for the student.

The black SUV, perhaps a Chevrolet Blazer, failed to stop and nearly hit the guard and the student, Edwards said.

The driver did stop in the crosswalk afterward.

Police describe the driver as a white female in her 60s or 70s who has reddish, blonde curly hair.

Edwards said the concern is whether the incident was a result of driver inattention or perhaps a more serious issue concerning the driver.

"The near misses do not make it any less dangerous,'' he said.

Any person with information about the incident is asked to call Edwards at 942-6685.
