Police seek three teens caught on video burglarizing Capital High

Nov 16, 2012 (The Santa Fe New Mexican - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Santa Fe police are searching for three teenage boys suspected of stealing thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment from Capital High School.

Video released to reporters on Thursday shows the three teens breaking into the school just after midnight Nov. 1. The teens make their way to a computer lab, smash a glass window in the door with a small sledgehammer, unlock the door, then run out with two 21-inch Apple iMac computers.

The teenagers wore black hooded jackets and had white bandannas covering their faces.

Capt. Aric Wheeler said Santa Fe police suspect the teens of being involved in gang activity as well as 10 to 15 residential burglaries in the neighborhoods surrounding Capital High School. Wheeler was not able to confirm whether the teens are Capital High School students.

This summer, Santa Fe Public Schools bought $2.4 million worth of Apple products for city schools, which included 1,270 iMac computers.

Capital interim Principal Channell Wilson-Segura told KOAT-TV on Thursday that the school had been broken into "several" times this year, and that on each occasion, burglars stole electronics.

According to police reports, on Sept. 21 an Epson projector and computer monitor were stolen from a portable building at the school. On Oct. 6, an Apple Macbook laptop computer was stolen from a classroom. A Casio projector, valued at $2,200, was stolen during the week of Oct. 16.

The break-ins have prompted the school to install more security cameras and add to its security staff, Wilson-Segura said.

Investigators have evidence that might link the three teens to other residential burglaries in the area, though Wheeler would not elaborate on the details of those cases.
