Oakdale too much for novice Pacheco

Nov 16, 2012 (Los Banos Enterprise (Los Banos - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Pacheco's first experience in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs proved the be a little too much for the inexperienced squad.

But despite a 63-7 rout at the hands of perennial power Oakdale, the Panthers can still look back on a successful second varsity season.

"It got out of hand real quick -- they were up 14-0 before we got the ball," Pacheco coach David Snapp said. "Being our first playoffs experience, I think our kids were kind of wide-eyed and kind of tight, and it just snowballed in the first quarter." Since 2006, 14 schools have opened in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Of those teams, four of them made the playoffs in their second year of varsity play -- Antelope began play in 2009 and made the 2010 playoffs at 6-5, Liberty Ranch began play in 2010 and made the 2011 playoffs at 9-4, and American Canyon and Pacheco, which both started varsity play in 2011 and made this year's playoffs. AC (10-1) is seeded fourth in the D-3 playoffs, and hosts No. 5 Cosumnes Oaks tonight.

"That's not bad company to be part of," Snapp said. "I know there's a couple schools that started in '06 -- Central Valley's one of them -- that never made the playoffs. To make it in our second year is pretty amazing." One small victory for Pacheco was putting one touchdown up against Oakdale, a 10-yard pass from Daniel Marquez to tight end Hunter Mendez in the third quarter, preventing what would have been the first time the Panthers were shut out this season.

"The first year at Los Banos we were in playoffs, St. Mary's trounced us," said Snapp, who was running backs coach at LB before taking the Pacheco head coaching position. "The next year we made it to the semifinals. It takes getting there and knowing what to expect." With 16 starters coming back next season and a junior-varsity team that came one win away from a league title during its 7-3 campaign, Snapp sees a bright future for Pacheco football.

"There's some things we think we can do better," Snapp said. "And we'll go through and detail what those are and get to work in the next few weeks."
