THS student to sing in national chorus

Nov 14, 2012 (LaGrange Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- THS student to sing in national chours slideshow THS student to sing in national chours slideshow Phillip Botica, a senior at Troup High School, has been chosen to perform with the American High School Honors Chorus in February as part of the Carnegie Hall Performing Arts series and the National Association for Music Education.

Last spring, Botica was nominated for this honor by Elizabeth Biggs, the choral director at Troup High School.

"He made the first cut and this summer, we submitted an audition CD recorded at the LaGrange College concert hall. We recently were informed that Phillip was accepted and will be singing with the group in February in Carnegie Hall," Biggs said.

In fifth grade, teachers at the Lafayette Christian School started to encourage him to pursue his singing talent. It was then that Botica joined the Young Singers of West Georgia, a group that he still belongs to today.

Botica is also studying voice with Dr. Earl Coleman, dean of the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University.

Botica has received honors for his singing talents. In 2010, he took first place in LaGrange Symphony's Student Competition Awards in the LaGrange Area (SCALA) and in 2011, he took first place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing in their high school boy's division.

Botica will perform as a soloist Sunday at the Choral Society of West Georgia's seventh annual Thanksgiving concert. The concert will be held at 5:30 p.m., in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church in LaGrange.

Botica lives with his parents, Paul and Corina, and his younger sister, Cristinne. Botica hopes to attend Columbus State University in the fall, where he wants to major in vocal performance.
