EDITORIAL: Norman named Star-Telegram editorial director
Nov 15, 2012 (Fort Worth Star-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Mike Norman, a veteran editor and columnist at the Star-Telegram, has been chosen to direct the paper's editorial and opinion pages.
Norman, who joined the Star-Telegram in 1981 as a business reporter, served on the news side as business editor and metro editor before moving to the editorial pages in 1996 to become editorial director for the paper's Northeast Tarrant County edition.
He later added responsibility for Arlington and all of eastern Tarrant County.
A native of Brownwood and a journalism graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Norman was a Sloan Fellow in Economics Journalism at Princeton University. He is a long-time resident of Euless.
"I'm extremely pleased that Mike Norman will become the Star-Telegram's editorial director," Publisher Gary Wortel said. "Mike has a deep understanding of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, with many years of experience in all facets of the Star-Telegram's newsroom. He is a very diligent journalist whose appetite for accuracy, quality and fairness are recipes for a successful editorial director."
Norman replaces J.R. Labbe, who left the Star-Telegram in August to become vice president for communications and community affairs at JPS Health Network. He has been the newspaper's interim editorial director since Labbe's departure.
"I couldn't ask for a better job," Norman said. "My wife, Sandy, and I have deep roots, family and friends in Tarrant County. Aiding the exchange of ideas and opinions on issues that are important to the people of such a vibrant and culturally diverse metropolitan area -- and being allowed to add my own opinion -- is both a challenge and an honor."
