BRIEF: Keene school board rejects both elementary plans

Nov 14, 2012 (The Keene Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- After Keene Board of Education members rejected two plans to restructure the city's five elementary schools, it's back to square one.

The board has been looking for ways to reduce costs at the elementary level since a 2009 report found that the district spends significantly more at that level than other districts.

In separate votes, both restructuring plans the board was considering failed, 5-4, at a meeting Tuesday.

One plan was a narrow grade span model, where kindergarten and 1st grade would be housed at two schools and 2nd grade and 5th grade would be housed at two schools.

The narrow grade span was expected to save more money annually but was unpopular with community members, who spoke out against it at the polls in March and at several public meetings.

The other option was maintaining a kindergarten through 5th-grade model.

Both plans called for turning Jonathan Daniels School into the district's preschool.
