Community chorus sings tonight

Nov 13, 2012 (Jackson County Floridan - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Chipola College vocal music instructor Dale Heidebrecht put together a community chorus a few months ago, and the group will perform publicly for the first time tonight during the free Chipola Fall Ensemble Concert.

It will be held in the school's new Center for the Arts. The 7 p.m. show will also feature the Chipola Chamber Chorus and a performance by the Chipola Rock and Jazz Ensemble.

Heidebrecht said the Community Chorus is made up of about 40 people who range in age from their late teens into their 60s and 70s.

"It's got promise," Heidebrecht said of the Chorus. "The joy of choral music is the community that it builds. There shouldn't be any stars -- everyone's on equal footing, contributing what they can. All of those combined efforts are what produce the sound that you hear. I think people are going to enjoy coming out to hear what they've been able to achieve." The Chipola Chamber Chorus will sing first tonight, offering about five or six selections, and the Community Chorus will join them for a presentation of The Promise of Living by Aaron Copland , and Ave Maria, composed by Franz Biebl.

The experiment of combining the Community and Chamber Choruses has been so successful that Heidebrecht had created a hybrid course that will be offered next term. Students enrolled at Chipola who take the College Chorus course will pay tuition and earn credits for the class. Community members can take the course at no charge, and would have no credits associated with participating. The class will meet on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.
