BRIEF: Jimmy Carter among new Mercer University trustees

Nov 08, 2012 (The Macon Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- When Mercer University trustees gather for their fall meeting Friday, one of them will have Secret Service protection.

Jimmy Carter, the country's 39th president, is set to join other new members of the school's board of trustees.

Carter, 88, a former Georgia governor, also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Up to nine new trustees will come onto the board, and Carter will be one of them, said Rick Cameron, senior assistant vice president for marketing communications at Mercer.

"He will be at the meeting tomorrow and has to leave following the meeting," Cameron said.

Mercer's 45-member board of trustees has responsibility for overall policy-making for the college. They serve five-year terms.

Many of Mercer's trustees will be gathering on campus later Thursday for activities that include a trustees dinner. It's also homecoming weekend at Mercer.

Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, live in Plains.
