Teen leans on mom's lessons to help police catch stalker

Nov 07, 2012 (Houston Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The "stranger danger" lessons he learned as a child paid off for a teenager after he helped police arrest a stalking suspect near his school in the Alief Independent School District, a school official said.

Roberto Joel Orellana, 27, of Houston, has been charged with misdemeanor enticing a child, court records show. A judge set $50,000 bail for the suspect, who was being held Wednesday at the Harris County Jail.

"Last Thursday, one of our Holub Middle School students reported that a man had been following him as he walked to school for the past several mornings," said school district spokeswoman Susan Castro. "He told police that the man had pulled over that morning and tried to talk him into getting into his vehicle. The 8th-grader immediately called his father and the man left." The alert student, 15, provided police with the suspect's description, as well as the make and model of the vehicle and the license plate number.

On Monday, the teen headed back to school, but this time he wasn't alone. Alief ISD police officers were monitoring his walk from a distance with binoculars. Right on cue, Castro said, the suspect showed up again and tried to entice the teen to his vehicle. Police moved in and quickly handcuffed Orellana.

"In this case the boy did exactly what he was supposed to do," Castro said. "He remained calm, he got a description, he got the license-plate number and he reported it to police. "And of course, the most important thing: he did not get into that car." The boy's mother told school officials that she has discussed "stranger danger" scenarios with the boy since he first enrolled in school, Castro said.

"Needless to say, she's very proud of her son," Castro said.
