GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lady Bronchos fall in opener

Nov 07, 2012 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Odessa High girls basketball coach Harry Masch said before the season that his team was going to be vertically challenged.

In the Lady Bronchos' season opener Tuesday, they were challenged horizontally, as well.

Kayla Beattie scored a game-high 12 points and visiting Midland Classical ruled the paint at both ends of the floor to beat Odessa High 41-26 in the Odessa High Fieldhouse.

Kristen Johnson and Amy Hinton each added eight points in the victory.

LaTanya McMaryion scored 10 points to lead Odessa High, which travels to play Thursday through Saturday in the Cisco Tournament.

"We didn't hit our open shots in the first half," Masch said. "In fact, we threw up a few air balls.

"I thought Tanya got loosened up a bit in the second half and we had to start attacking the zone with the drive and then dish it outside. But we couldn't make the passes early and they outrebounded us at both ends." Things started off well for the Lady Bronchos, who scored the season's first points and then led, 4-2, on Maya Wood's second basket of the first quarter. Wood finished with five points.

But the Lady Knights, behind a pair of field goals by Hinton and a back-to-back 3-pointers by Beattie, went on an 11-0 run to close out the first quarter to open a 13-4 lead after eight minutes.

Midland Classical never looked back.
