Public urged to participate in Oct. 18 Congressional debate


Oct 09, 2012 (Bristol Herald Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ABINGDON, Va. -- The public is urged to participate in the upcoming 9th District Congressional debate between incumbent Republican Morgan Griffith and challenger Anthony Flaccavento, a Democrat.



The debate is scheduled at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 18 at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. It is being hosted by the Washington County member at-large unit of the League of Women Voters of Virginia.

The candidates are scheduled to debate for an hour. They will answer questions from the audience during the first half of the debate and then field questions from a panel that includes journalists from the Bristol Herald Courier and WCYB TV.


Blank cards will be available at the door of the grand hall for audience members to submit questions, according to a statement. Audience members who wish to submit a question should arrive by 7:00 p.m., and have their question submitted by 7:10 p.m. League members will sort and select the questions to be read by the moderator.

Political banners, signs and paraphernalia will not be allowed within 30 feet of the center's parking lot. Except for legitimate news organizations, flash cameras, audio or video recording equipment of any type will not be allowed in the grand h and all cell phones must be turned off.
