County to test warning system, offer new weather alertsSep 17, 2012 (Kerrville Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Kerr County will call residents and businesses who have signed up for the free CodeRED alert service. CodeRED is intended to allow county officials to quickly deliver phone, text and email messages to the entire county, or to targeted areas. The service now includes a weather warning notification, which is intended to alert residents who are in the path of severe weather. Those who are already in the CodeRED database must sign up for the weather notification. Residents may select the type of weather alerts they wish to receive. Types of alerts include severe thunderstorm, tornado and flash flood warnings. Sheriff Rusty Hierholzer is encouraging everyone to register their phone numbers with his office to receive the CodeRED service. Recipients of CodeRED warnings will see "Emergency Communication Network," or "866-419-5000" in their caller ID displays for CodeRED calls. For weather warnings, recipients will see either "Emergency Communication Network," or "866-566-9780" in their caller ID displays. To sign up for CodeRED notifications or to receive severe weather warnings for Kerr County -- including the cities of Kerrville and Ingram -- log onto the Kerr County Sheriff's Office Web site at http://www.kerrcountysheriff.org and follow the link to the CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment page.
