Georgia lawmaker blasts Turzai at Democratic ConventionSep 07, 2012 (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Georgia Congressman John Lewis tossed a barb Mike Turzai's way tonight during an attack on voter identification calls launched from the stage of the Democratic National Convention. He mentioned the Bradford Woods Republican by title, not by name. "It is unbelievable that there are Republican officials still trying to stop some people from voting. They are changing the rules, cutting polling hours and imposing requirements intended to suppress the vote," Mr. Lewis said in television remarks broadcast from the Time Warner Cable Arena. "The Republican leader in the Pennsylvania House even bragged that his state's new voter ID law is 'gonna allow Gov. Romney to win the state.' That's not right. That's not fair. That's not just," Mr. Lewis told a crowd of 15,000 delegates and guests a packed Time Warner Cable Arena. A spokesman for Mr. Turzai in Harrisburg could not immediately be reached for comment. During a Republican State Committee meeting in Hershey in June Mr. Turzai ticked off a list of GOP accomplishments. His list included this: "Voter ID, which is going to allow Gov. [Mitt] Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done." The comment drew immediate fire from Democrats who said the remark showed that the GOP's true motivation behind the voter ID law was to suppress the Democratic vote. Since then, the law has survived an initial court challenge but is awaiting an appellate court ruling.
