DukeNet Taps Cisco to Expand Fiber Network Access Across the Southeast

Aug 28, 2012 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- DukeNet Communications announced their deployment with Cisco to expand their fiber network Ethernet access across the Southeast.

According to a release, this Cisco ASR 9000 network upgrade in the Carolinas helps DukeNet evolve beyond transport and now provide additional services with this routed platform.

The Company reported that the upgrade will intelligently blend the edge, aggregation and access points in DukeNet's massive network, simplifying operation and accelerating IPv6 service implementation across the Southeast.

DukeNet Communications has built a fiber foundation on traditional transport methodology over 7,000 miles of fiber across the Southeastern United States and is now a Provider Edge (PE) core aggregation facility providing interconnectivity with the broader Ethernet exchange network. This DukeNet next generation network is now interconnected at Layer 2 and 3 to other provider networks.

"Beyond providing excellent regional coverage, which DukeNet has been well known for, we're now creating a foundation for delivering more advanced services. This is consistent with our strategy of building the best network first, then layering on services, rather than the other way around," said David Herran, DukeNet's senior director of network architecture.

The Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers can serve as the foundational baseline for next-generation Carrier Ethernet networks, providing up to 96 terabits (Tbps) per system.

"We're pleased to partner with Cisco on this network upgrade," says Mike Prendergast, SVP sales and marketing for DukeNet. "This ensures our commitment to providing excellent customer service while supporting our strategy for enterprise Ethernet growth." DukeNet installed ASR 9000 units in major metropolitan areas including: Charlotte, Winston Salem/Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham, NC and Greenville, SC. The company has plans to expand into Atlanta, GA, Knoxville and Nashville, TN, Ashville, NC, Columbia and Charleston, SC in the near future.

Headquartered in Charlotte, NC, DukeNet is a regional service provider offering advanced data and high capacity bandwidth services to enterprise, data center, government, and carrier customers.
