Third suspect charged in Vanceboro home invasion

May 15, 2012 (Sun Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A third suspect has been arrested in connection with the April 17 home invasion at a couple's home in Vanceboro.

James Matthew Ireland, 28, of River Road in Vanceboro, was arrested Sunday night in Pamlico County by the Pamlico County Sheriff's Office.

Capt. Joe Heckman of the Craven County Sheriff's Office said that investigations and tips led to Ireland's capture in an abandoned house in Pamlico County.

He is being held in the Craven County jail on a $1 million bond.

Two other suspects were arrested shortly after the home invasion at the Piney Neck Road residence.

John Matthew Nigh, 24, of 110 G Harpers Lane in Grantsboro and Anthony James Potter, 26, of Half Moon Road were taken into custody separately several days after the incident. Both were charged with first-degree burglary and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The victims said the men entered just as the man of the house sat down in his living room chair to watch television.

The men wearing bandanas and masks held the couple at gunpoint as the two searched the home for items to steal, according to Heckman. The pair made off with prescription pain medication, a flat-screen television, laptop computer, .410-caliber shotgun, and a .22-caliber pistol, cordless telephone and the couple's wallets and cash.

When the men left, they ran to a pickup owned by Nigh. A description of the vehicle was put out over a police radio frequency. A deputy in the area spotted the vehicle and gave chase.

Reports stated the fleeing car struck a ditch at the intersection of Maple Cypress Road and Biddle Road. The pickup wrecked.

Ireland is charged with first-degree burglary.

The couple at the home were not injured.
