China Unicom Abandons Introducing 3G iPad 2

BEIJING, Dec 12, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, and SHSE: 600050) decides to give up direct introduction of 3G iPad 2.

Lately, deputy general manager of the leading telecom carrier Li Gang commented that iPad was more suitable to be sold through traditional IT sales network, different from iPhone. Hence, China Unicom will not introduce 3G iPad 2 temporarily and will focus on providing users with more convenient 3G data surfing service.

China Unicom and Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) started talking about the introduction of iPad from 2010. However, because 3G iPad has not gotten network access license from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China Unicom commenced talking with Apple about the introduction of 3G iPad 2 in July 2011 after the latter launched new-generation iPad.

However, beyond expectations, after promotion in inland China on September 21, 3G iPad 2 has not become popular like iPhone, which was bought by Chinese customers who queued up for the sales of the smart phone. Insiders believe that the sales policy of Apple worked out for the Chinese market causes the unpopularity of the tablet computer in China.
