West York police make arrest in convenience store robbery

Nov 11, 2011 (York Daily Record - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Update Friday West York Borough Police have arrested Kyjuan Scales, 23, of the 900 block of West Princess Street in connection with Wednesday's robbery of the Turkey Hill in the 1500 block of West Market Street, according to a news release.

Police obtained an arrest warrant after two witnesses identified Scales from a police photo line-up.

Police then located and apprehended Scales without incident. They said he was found sleeping on a couch in the 900 block of West Princess Street in York.

Police interviewed Scales, who they said admitted to committing the robbery at the West York Turkey Hill. He was then transported to Central Booking for arraignment this morning.

Reported earlier YORK, Pa. -- Police in two municipalities are looking for a man -- described as having distinguishable facial characteristics -- who they say has robbed three convenience stores recently.

Two robberies occurred at stores in Spring Garden Township on Tuesday, and on Wednesday afternoon, a store was robbed in West York, according to news releases.

In one robbery, the man had a bandage under his eye. In the second one, he was described as having a birthmark under his eye. In the third, the description was of a man with teardrop tattoos under one eye, and a bandage on the other side of his face.

Those similar characteristics have caused police to think one man is responsible for all three.

"We are looking at the same guy," West York Borough Police Sgt. Brad Thomas said Thursday.

In the most recent robbery, the man walked in to the Turkey Hill Minit Market, located in the 1500 block of West Market Street, and demanded that the clerk open the money drawer and give him cash. He then ran with the cash south on South Adams Street, police said.

In addition to the teardrop tattoos and bandage, the robber was described as a black male, in his early 20s, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall, wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and white sneakers, police said.

Spring Garden Township robberies Police Chief George Swartz said investigators believe the same man committed both robberies in his township.

"The descriptions are similar," Swartz said Thursday.

On Tuesday about 1:04 a.m., at the Rutter's Farm Store, 910 S. Richland Ave., a man walked into the store, approached the clerk, and demanded money from the cash register. The man did not display a weapon, police said.

He was described as a black male, in his late 20s to early 30s, 5 feet, 3 inches tall with a thin build, wearing a red baseball cap and gray hooded sweatshirt. He also had a large bandage on his right cheek.

Then at 11:22 p.m., a man walked into the Turkey Hill Minit Mart, 1338 Mt. Rose Ave., approached the clerk, and demanded money from the cash register. As in the first robbery, he did not display a weapon, police said.

In this robbery, the man was described as a black male, 5 feet, 3 inches to 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a thin build, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants, light or white shoes, and a dark hat with a light brim. He also had a birthmark under his eye, police said.

No injuries were reported in either robbery, and police continue to investigate.
