Grant available for STEM nonprofits

Oct 06, 2011 (The Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) nonprofit organizations in Yuma have the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in grant funding and the chance to star in a Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) commercial through the Time Warner Cable's Super Connector Search contest.

One local winner will star in a CAMM public service announcement produced by Time Warner Cable to run on air in Yuma. In addition to the commercial, a Yuma winner will receive $5,000 in grant funding to go toward their selected nonprofit organization.

Time Warner Cable subscribers can enter the contest on the CAMM website at www.connectamillionminds.com and share how they have been connecting young people to various STEM activities.

"With Time Warner Cable's CAMM initiative, our mission is to generate interest in STEM activities and inspire the next generation of problem solvers. After all, they are our future leaders," said Angela Meluski senior account executive of Westbound Communications.

The deadlines for entries to be submitted is Oct. 16.

"Depending on the number of entries, we anticipate the local winners to be identified at the end of October," Meluski said.

On Nov. 28, the local public service announcements created will be featured on CAMM's website for public voting. The entry that receives the most votes will be named the "People's Choice" winner, and the nonprofit STEM organization will receive an additional $10,000 in grant funding.

In addition to the pubic voting, a panel of judges will select a local contest winner to film a nationwide commercial. The STEM nonprofit group will also receive $10,000 in grant funding.
