DStv Launches Satellite Technology CompetitionJul 11, 2011 (Financial Gazette/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- INNOVATION and creativity will be the buzzwords as students across Africa will be put to the test in a competition of the amazing satellite technology. The Digital Satellite TV broadcaster, DStv, in collaboration with Eutelsat and Mindset Learn brings to Africa, Zimbabwe included, the DStv-Eutelsat Star Awards competition. The creative contest is being held under the theme "Creating Space for African Ideas". Students will be required to design a poster or write an essay on how satellites could improve Africa's development or the development of their country or community. In a statement from DStv, the competition is aimed at "stimulating interest and passion for satellite technology in young people across Africa", hence, secondary and high school "students are required to be innovative about its possible uses and, importantly, how they would use satellite technology to develop and improve Africa". "Look at the way it is changing our lives. It brings us TV, live sport, banking, education, weather forecasts and long-distance medical diagnosis," the statement said. Students - between 14 and 19 - are encouraged to consult with their science or technology teachers to increase the quality of their entries, which can be submitted in English, French or Portuguese. "Entry forms (including conditions and rules) are available from all MultiChoice branches or www.dstvstarawards.com "A resource booklet for teachers and students has been developed for the competition and can be accessed on this website. "Finalists from individual countries across Africa will compete for the overall prizes: The winner will get a trip to a spaceport to attend a live rocket launch, including a visit to Eutelsat in Paris, France. The runner-up will win a trip to Eutelsat in Paris and two merit winners will each be given a trip to MultiChoice and Mindset Learn in Johannesburg, South Africa." Entries must reach the MultiChoice Zimbabwe offices by August 1. |
