Appian Dominates BPM in the Cloud

RESTON, VA, Jun 06, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Appian, the global innovator in enterprise and cloud-based business process management (BPM) software, today announced that Appian's cloud BPM continues to lead the industry in terms of technology capabilities and customer adoption. Appian provides the only BPM Platform-as-a-Service that is identical to its full-featured on-premise offering. Appian also allows easy migration of complete BPM applications between cloud and on-premise environments, giving organizations the easiest path to enjoy the benefits of cloud BPM. In addition to a complete PaaS, Appian also offers a host of industry-specific and horizontal Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, many of which are available for free download from the Appian Forum online community.

New enhancements to Appian Cloud have driven customer adoption to unprecedented levels. In Q1 2011 (Appian's most successful quarter in company history), 42 percent of new software orders were for cloud deployment. Q2 2011 is currently tracking to 50 percent of software sales coming from Appian Cloud.

In its October 2010 "Magic Quadrant for Business Process Management Suites" report, Gartner states that Appian "sets the bar for BPM in the cloud." Appian is also the only cloud BPM provider to receive Authority to Operate (ATO) certification under the FISMA Act of 2002, giving federal customers the assurance that Appian Cloud meets stringent federal security regulations.

Appian Cloud Enhancements Appian continues to drive technology innovation in both cloud and on-premise BPM, such as mobile BPM and Appian's new social business interface, Appian Tempo. Appian Cloud customers are the first to enjoy the benefits of these new capabilities, as they are automatically and seamlessly upgraded to new versions of the Appian BPM Suite. In addition, Appian Cloud provides reliability and security that can be tough to match by even the best internally managed environments.

Additional cloud-specific enhancements to Appian's offering include: -- Secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection: VPNs allow clients to establish a secure connection to systems behind the enterprise firewall. Restricting access to Appian Cloud servers through a VPN ensures that, like in an on-premise installation, the Appian Cloud servers will only be accessible from inside your enterprise firewall.

-- Private-labeled Applications: Appian allows customers to deliver private-labeled distributions of their cloud BPM applications.

Private-labeled versions are identical to other Appian applications, but provide a user experience that is entirely branded to the Appian customer's or partner's organization.

-- Starter Edition: In response to customers using the cloud for BPM pilots with their on-premise deployment, Appian has developed the Appian Cloud Starter Edition. The program provides instant cloud environments for development, testing, and training.

-- Expanded global data center options: Appian Cloud includes localized hosting in the U.S. (Virginia, California), the U.K. (Ireland) and recently added Asia (Singapore) for compliance with geographic laws and optimization of bandwidth traffic.

Cloud BPM - Accelerate a Project, or Expand a Program Appian's unique architecture and cloud capabilities give customers a variety of ways to take advantage of cloud computing. Customers continue to cite time-to-deployment, no up-front investment, and minimal infrastructure dependencies as key value propositions. These organizations use Appian Cloud for core business processes across Finance, Acquisition, Human Resources, Customer Service and other areas.

Organizations including Bard, AIG, Starbucks, Manulife Financial, Bupa, Clayton Holdings and the U.S. Department of Education have embraced the Appian Cloud value proposition for fast deployment and low maintenance overhead. The Department of Education's use of Appian Cloud for its Civil Rights Data Collection process was recently cited by CIO Magazine as a success story for the Obama Administration's "Cloud First" policy.

Appian Cloud is also being used by companies such as CME Group as a low-cost and low-risk way to pilot an initial BPM solution. These pilots are often then brought in-house for rapid launch of an on-premise BPM program. CME Group, for example, piloted its first Appian process in the cloud, and has subsequently deployed several on-premise Appian applications.

Existing on-premise Appian customers, such as Amazon.com, have used migration to the cloud as a means for lowering the cost of a BPM deployment, or to expand their existing programs. Several of Appian's financial services customers in the U.S. and Europe have taken this route, including a recent cloud expansion deal of more than $800,000 with a European investment management firm.

"Appian was the first vendor to offer a complete BPM suite in the cloud, and since that time we have continued to set the bar for cloud BPM innovation," said Matthew Calkins, Appian's President and CEO.

"The value proposition and full-featured capabilities of Appian Cloud cannot be matched by any competitive offering, and that is why we are seeing such an explosion of interest from the market."
