Alvarion's BreezeMAX Extreme 3650 solution deployed by PPL for wireless broadband coverage in Pennsylvania

(Telecomworldwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Alvarion Ltd (Nasdaq:ALVR), a provider of 4G networks in the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) market, announced on Tuesday that Pennsylvania’s PPL Electric Utilities is deploying its BreezeMAX Extreme 3650 WiMAX solution as part of its smart grid communications network. Financial details of the deployment were not available.

The communication network upgrade, which has been enabled by a grant from the US Department of Energy, constitutes the first phase of PPL’s smart grid project with initial coverage of over 60,000 customers over 150 square miles in the company’s Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, operating region.

Alvarion’s solution is being deployed as part of an agreement with Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext:ALU), which is also providing a high-speed fibre-optic communication infrastructure for the project and is ensuring end-to-end integration of these technologies on behalf of PPL.

PPL Electric Utilities, a subsidiary of PPL Corporation (NYSE:PPL), provides electric delivery service in 29 counties of eastern and central Pennsylvania.

Alcatel-Lucent is a provider of communication solutions.
