Another sweepstakes parlor robbed at gunpoint

Jan 21, 2011 (Star-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- An armed robbery occurred at 2:44 this morning at a sweepstakes parlor, according to New Hanover County dispatchers.

A man armed with a gun entered the Pot 'o Gold Sweepstakes on 1614 Market Street and stole money from a cash box as well as a semi-automatic handgun.

The man, dressed in a toboggan cap and a black and white striped shirt, went into the business and asked for change, according to a news release by the Wilmington Police Department. When the employee went behind the counter to get change, the robber pointed a handgun at him and demanded money. According to the release, the employee said the robber made him go into the bathroom, and when he came out, the robber had left.

The robber is described as a black male, 35- to 40-years-old and is approximately five foot nine inches with a heavy build and some facial hair.

The Wilmington Police Department was not able to make an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600. Information may be submitted anonymously through Text-A-Tip. Enter Tip708 and the information, and send to CRIMES (274637).

This is the second sweepstakes parlor robbery in days and the third in months.

Two men, armed with a shotgun and clad in hooded sweatshirts that partially covered their faces, held up a sweepstakes parlor early Tuesday morning on Market Street, stealing cash from the register and robbing several customers.

The robbery at 777 Sweepstakes parlor on 5214 Market Street happened shortly after midnight. The two men held employees and customers at gunpoint and forced some of them to hand over cash and a wallet containing a debit card.

A similar robbery occurred in September when a man robbed a Lucky Sweepstakes parlor on 2900 Carolina Beach Road at gunpoint.
