Thailand turns to mobile digital devices to promote tourism

BANGKOK, Dec 23, 2010 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- With the rising popularity of digitally mobile devices, Thailand now turns to hand-held electronic equipment to promote its tourism.

The state Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on Thursday officially launched its mobile application to promote the country' s tourism, a campaign known as "Amazing Thailand", on popular platforms such as iPhone, BlackBerry and Android.

Contents about Thai tourism generated by TAT are already available on the agency's website, but from now people can also download them on their cell phones or other hand-held devices.

"It gets rid of the burden of carrying a lot of guide books," TAT governor Suraphon Svetasreni told reporters at the launching.

Suraphon said the mobile application is now available free-of- charge in English language only as so far the great majority of users downloading TAT contents on their mobile devices have been Western people.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT director of marketing information technology, said the agency plans to make the application available in Thai and other languages later on.

She said since its test-run on Dec. 16, 70 percent of its users were people in the United States and Europe.

She said the agency's web contents have been among the world's top three most accessed through Facebook in terms of tourism pages.
