Internet service provider loses assets to B.C. firm after Telus court fight

(Canadian Press DataFile Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KAMLOOPS, B.C. _ A North Vancouver-based telecommunications company is the successful bidder for the assets of a bankrupt Internet service provider in Kamloops.

Navigata Communications 2009 won the bid for On Call Internet Services and its remaining customer base.

On Call became locked in a long and ultimately losing dispute with Telus Corp. (TSX:T) over its wholesale rates.

Shawn Hall, a corporate spokesman for Telus, said a B.C. Supreme Court judge awarded On Call's assets to Navigata for $60,000. It is owed about $1 million in overdue services and court judgments that will go largely unpaid.

``We always said our intention was to have the bills paid or have On Call made bankrupt and sold to another service provider,'' Hall said.

On Call had few assets, a dwindling customer base and recently lost a major contract with the city of Kamloops.

``We wholesale to them (Navigata) in other areas and have always had a good relationship,'' Hall said.

Navigata provides telecommunications and data services and was originally spun off from B.C. Rail Telecommunications.

The firm is now a member of the SaskTel group of companies and also has offices in Toronto and Calgary.

The company declined a request for an interview.

A news release said On Call's customer base will enhance Navigata's operations in the Kamloops area and increase competition. Navigata already offers long distance and other telecommunication services in the same market. (Kamloops Daily News) (c) 2010 The Canadian Press
