Google Files for Online Map Service in China

BEIJING, Jun 11, 2010 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG), the world's reputed online search service provider, has handed in an application for a continuous provision of online map service in China to the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.

The filing came after the Chinese regulator said in May that all the companies that provided online map, location services, searches, or downloading services in the country were expected to get a license to continue their operation. The companies are required to prove that they have systems in accordance with the regulations, to ensure that their maps are labeled in line with the local laws, and to delete all the sensitive information like the addresses of military facilities.

The US-based company will find it difficult to comply with the new rules, as it allows its users to mark on its maps, pointed out market observers. Notably, a group of executives for Google China have left the company since the search giant announced its decision to quit Mainland China.
