Nortel CVAS Expands Interoperability Program to Reduce Time-to-Market and Network Costs for Service Providers Across the Globe

(Market Wire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/15/10 -- Addressing service providers' growing need to support a plethora of devices, applications and access types from a variety of vendors, Nortel(1) (OTCBB: NRTLQ) Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions (CVAS) has expanded its CVAS VoIP Third Party Partner Program. The program integrates a broad range of devices, applications and services with Nortel CVAS' industry-leading portfolio of carrier softswitches, application servers and gateways, allowing service providers to quickly and confidently deploy new services to subscribers.

The Nortel CVAS Third Party Partner Program has completed interoperability testing with more than 100 companies and 200 partner products. These tests have included mobile terminals/handsets, line access gateways and IP PBXs, Application Servers and Softswitches, Enterprise Edge devices, Session Border Controllers, Set Top Boxes and OSS systems.

In addition, Nortel has achieved interoperability success with over 80% of the industry's leading IP PBXs and IP phone manufacturers, has tested across all major broadband access types and 100% of the IP Protocols. To show its compatibility with mobile VoIP and 3G/4G networks, Nortel has also performed interoperability tests on industry leading smartphone devices, including the iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile OS-based devices and is gearing up testing for the Android OS.

"Nortel understands that service providers need to move quickly and introduce solutions that integrate a broad range of devices and applications both within the operator's network and at the end user's premise," said Samih Elhage, president, CVAS, Nortel. "To help meet this need, we have expanded our interoperability program which is designed to give a complete, end-to-end testing environment tailored to the carrier's specific needs and subscriber demands. The Program arms service providers and developers with the knowledge and means to introduce new services and applications in a more cost-effective and efficient manner, which ultimately leads to greater revenue potential and subscriber loyalty." BT Spain has leveraged its testing with Nortel's Program to expand its hosted IP offer into new business segments. Nortel completed VoIP interoperability testing with a number of devices helping BT Spain to speed up the introduction of new services including DECT SIP handsets, Conference room phones and other vendor devices.

In recent months, Nortel CVAS has performed a number of successful consumer interoperability tests, including VoIP calls over a 4G mobile network using a Motorola WIMAX analogue terminal adaptor and Nortel's Adaptive Application Engine software. Another recent test involved a 3G real-time video sharing session between a Windows Mobile Smartphone and PC/Web-based video client that showed how users can share live videos between different mobile and wireline networks. These tests will help service providers introduce new services with the confidence that they will integrate smoothly and efficiently with their networks.

Nortel CVAS has performed VoIP interoperability tests with leading suppliers, including Alcatel-Lucent, Calix, Genesys, MobileMax, Motorola, Nokia, Polycom, Siemens, Tellabs, Technicolor, Zhone and many others.

This program reinforces Nortel CVAS on-going commitment to interoperability and standards compliance, and leverages Nortel CVAS understanding of real world, multi-vendor VoIP and multimedia service deployments. The program offers interoperability testing and validation across all of Nortel's Carrier VoIP softswitches and application servers, including Nortel's industry-leading Communication Server 2000, Communication Server 1500, and Adaptive Application Engine. In addition, the program creates opportunities for developers to ensure interoperability among products that use industry-standard protocols, including SIP, Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), H.248, H.323 and PacketCable Network-based Call Signaling (NCS).

Nortel CVAS will be at the GSMA Mobile World Congress tradeshow in Barcelona, Spain (February 15-18) in Hall 4, Level 5, Executive Suite 4.5HS04 to discuss the latest success, trends and solutions behind Nortel's carrier VoIP leadership.
