Food Channel names top 10 trends for 2010


Dec 23, 2009 (The Honolulu Advertiser - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- TV's Food Channel has named its top 10 food trends to watch in 2010 and none of them has to do with food: Well, not a specific food.

The trends, revealed on foodchannel.com and based on research conducted in conjunction with CultureWaves and the International Food Futurists, usually include particular items that are expected to be the "it" ingredient for the year. Not this time. Instead, it's all about attitudes and in particular our changing beliefs and ethics influenced by the economy, increasing internationalism, concerns about the future of the planet and other weighty issues.



The top 10 include: --Moving away from convenience foods to from-scratch cooking.

--Restaurants experimenting more with fusion concepts with "farm to table" particularly popular.


--Private store labels have been upgraded and are no longer considered second-rate; stores will be reconsidering other old-timey ways, including reintroducing a staffed meat counter.

--International ingredients and dishes once thought odd will become available and familiar.

--People will insist on food vetting and sourcing -- labeling that tells them where their food came from.

--Sustainability will continue to be a key goal for companies and individuals.

--People will become even more experimental and even less snobbish about being so (if it's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich you crave, have one; just make sure it non-GMO, natural peanut butter and real fruit jelly!).

--Food that are good for you and can prove it will continue to shout it from the roof-tops, with allergan-free, gluten-free foods especially of interest.

--People with gardens or services to offer will barter for food.

--Making your own, and adding your own twist to it, will be part of a general interested in individuality.
