Chinese online shoppers see annual increase of 38.9 pct, CNNIC

BEIJING, Dec 04, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China's online shopping user number increased 38.9 percent year on year to 87.88 million in the first half of 2009, according to a market research report conducted by the China Internet Network Information Center.

China's online purchases amounted to 119.52 billion yuan in the first half of 2009, and are estimated to hit 250 billion yuan over the entire year.

The purchases included 106.37 billion yuan from consumer-to-consumer (C2C) websites, and 13.15 billion from business-to-consumer (B2C) websites. The former attracted consumers by providing a variety of goods at affordable prices, while the latter achieved a higher degree of satisfaction, as it boasted superior products and services.

Generally, 80 percent of the online shoppers are satisfied with their online purchasing experiences.

In terms of product categories, clothing and home decorating products proved to be the most popular category, with 61.5 percent of online shoppers saying that they had purchased such products during the past six months.

The majority of online shoppers age between 18 and 30 with monthly incomes ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 yuan. There were also more female shoppers than male.

Shopping online provides more flexibility by negating the factors of time and location. The convenience of online shopping is becoming more and more appealing to consumers, along with the quickening pace of life.

However, the penetration rate of online shopping is still low, as only 26 percent of netizens have conducted online purchases, although 85.7 percent had searched for product information during the first half.

Most netizens have not yet developed the habit of shopping online, as 45.3 percent of the survey's respondents said that they have not yet become accustomed to it.

In the first half, China's netizen number tallied 338 million.
