BRIEF: Symphony makes magic happen

Nov 21, 2009 (La Crosse Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Golka brothers worked their musical magic Friday night with the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra.

Tomasz Golka, a finalist for the orchestra's conductor/music director position, was brilliant in his audition concert as he guided and pushed musicians to a high level of performance.

Beethoven's third symphony was simply outstanding, as the orchestra played with elegant, powerful interplay and relentless energy all the way to the bombastic ending.

Golka inspired the strings to play with more precision and crispness mixed with wonderful dynamics.

The orchestra's hard work paid off in a fantastic concert that shouldn't be missed.

Guest artist and Golka's brother, Adam, performed Chopin's second concerto with beauty, depth and clarity. Adam Golka, winner of two major American piano prizes, dazzled the audience at Viterbo University, displaying power and passion as he poured himself into the music.

At age 22, Adam Golka is a rising star and on track to become one of his generation's most exciting pianists. It also was nice to hear Bartok on the program with "Dances of Transylvania." Tomasz Golka passed his audition with flying colors. He and the orchestra will have a repeat performance at 7:30 p.m. toda To see more of the La Crosse Tribune or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.lacrossetribune.com/.
