BRIEF: Theater group turns to Internet to raise $$

PASADENA, Jul 21, 2009 (Pasadena Star-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Hoping to raise $50,000 to fund its annual performances and classes for young dancers, the nonprofit Pasadena Dance Theatre has organized an on-line auction, the first in its 50-year history, officials said Tuesday.

Approximately 150 items -- from gym memberships to hotel and airfare packages to baseball tickets -- are posted on-line at www.cmarket.com (search for "Pasadena Dance Theatre" under the "Browse Auctions" tab).

Bidders have until until midnight July 31 to post bids on the items, which were donated for the fund-raiser, officials said.

"The dance theater is a small company and we don't hold a big fund-raiser with 500 people with a live auction," said Jim Retorsion, the theater's board president. "The on-line auction was a very effective, efficient way to reach out to a lot of people." Proceeds from the auction will go to the theater company's conservatory, which trains dancers as young as 5, and to its company of professional dancers, who stage several performances a year, including "The Nutcracker."
