JAPAN'S DOCOMO TO RELEASE CAR-MOUNTED WIRELESS MODULE
TOKYO - NTT DoCoMo Inc. (TSE:9437) has begun selling a
wireless communications module designed for installation in
automobiles.
The vehicle-mounted TM01-SA was developed with Denso Corp.
(TSE:6902) and is manufactured by Kyocera Corp. (TSE:6971).
Although DoCoMo has previously released modules incorporated
into electronic money settlement terminals for use in taxicabs,
the new product offers enhanced durability, vibration and heat
resistance so that it can be installed in such extreme
environments as the engine compartment. It is expected to sell
in the upper-30,000 yen range.
MOBILE INTERNET PENETRATION MAKES UP 4.8% IN UZBEKISTAN
TASHKENT - As of 1 January 2009, number of legal entities,
providing data transfer services, including Internet service,
made up 856. Number of internet cafes reached 872. Number of
companies, which have license to render data transfer services,
including Internet (operators and providers, except Internet
cafes) made up over 200, the State Demonopolization Committee
said. The analysis showed that legal entities rendered data
transfer services, including Internet, for 31.1 billion soums
in 2008 compared to 20.8 billion soums in 2007. Mobile
operators of Uzbekistan provided mobile internet services for
5.5 billion soums in 2008 against 1.2 billion soums in 2007.
Mobile internet penetration in Uzbekistan made up 4.8 per cent,
the committee said. The committee said there were about 1.3
million Internet users in December 2008 and major part of users
live in Tashkent city and some other large cities of the
country.
AUDTOR TO REVIEW TENDER PROCESS FOR AUSTRALIAN BROADBAND
NETWORK
CANBERRA - The national auditor will soon begin a full
review of the Australian government's abandoned National
Broadband Network (NBN) tender process.
Auditor-General Ian McPhee has written to the opposition
saying he had decided to conduct a complete audit of the tender
process, which was cancelled after the government decided none
of the tenders were suitable.
INDIAN GOVT SEEKS DETAILS OF BHARTI-MTN DEAL, TO SEEK LEGAL
OPINION
NEW DELHI - The Indian government Thursday said it has asked
Bharti to furnish all details of its proposed US$23 billion
deal with South African company MTN for legal scrutiny.
"We have asked for formal request/papers about the deal from
the company... there seems to be no problem with the deal but
still we want to be sure (about the compliance)," Salman
Khursheed, Minister of Corporate Affairs, told PTI, adding that
the matter will be referred to the law ministry for legal
opinion.
INDIANS MORE WILLING TO TRY NEXTGEN MOBILE SERVICES: KPMG
NEW DELHI - Indians are more willing to experiment with
value-added services, including chatting, video gaming and
watching live TV on mobile phones, as compared to their global
counterparts, KPMG says.
Asian consumers, including those in India, seem the most
willing to use their mobile phones for purchasing music, video
games, and watching live TV, followed by the Middle East and
Africa and Latin America, global consulting firm KPMG's
'Consumers and Convergence III' global survey found.
INDONESIAN TELCO XL SET TO OVERTAKE INDOSAT IN REVENUE
JAKARTA - Indonesia's PT Excelcomindo Pratama (XL)
(JSX:EXCL) said it is set to become the country's second
largest cellular phone operator in revenue, overtaking PT
Indosat.
XL, currently the country's third largest, had 16,500 units
of base transceiver stations by the end of last year as against
27,000 units of the country's largest cellular phone operator
PT Telkomsel.
